Yeast Free Living – Spelt Flour

Have you recently begun a yeast free diet? Or are you thinking about going on a yeast free diet? Whichever applies to you, you are probably looking for alternative ingredients for your recipes. Spelt is one of those ingredients you may have seen in products in health food shops.

About Spelt

Spelt, officially called Triticum aestivum var. spelt, was first grown about 5000 to 6000 BC in Iran. It has been grown for more than 300 years in Europe and for about 100 years in America. Often used to feed animals, it had recently become popular in nutrition due to being a high protein, highly nutritious grain with a distinctive nutty flavor.

Spelt has a similar appearance to wheat, but has a tougher husk, which is probably what protects the nutritional value. There is also more protein in spelt than wheat, and it is easier to digest as well. Some people who are sensitive to wheat are okay with eating spelt. However, it is important to note that spelt does contain gluten, and is therefore not compatible with a strict gluten free diet.

If you suffer from a yeast intolerance but you’re okay with gluten, then spelt should be okay for you, as long as you are able to find products or recipes free from yeast.

You can easily use spelt flour as a replacement for other grains in a recipe, whether it be pasta, bread, or any other similar grain-based foods. Some people find that mixing spelt flour with wheat flour is a nice compromise, for the enhanced nutrition and flavor provided by the spelt.

With more and more health food shops selling products made form spelt flour, and spelt flour itself, it is becoming a lot easier to include spelt in your diet. And this is true of any special diet or special ingredients. It’s just about knowing what to look for and where to buy it.

There are still many great, tasty foods that you can enjoy once you have cut out yeast. Eating a yeast free diet is actually a lot easier than you might think. For FREE help with living on a yeast free diet, visit Yeast Free Diets
