New research possibly opened a can of worms around the question can taking heartburn drugs cause pneumonia. The findings of the studies suggest that drugs belonging to two classes of popular heartburn medication may indeed slightly increase a person’s chance to develop pneumonia. Only two groups of prescribed medication have the negative effect.

Two kinds of popular prescribed drugs have been identified as the culprits in a series of studies performed across the world. Both types of drugs are widely prescribed for heartburn or ulcers. Popular over-the-counter medications for indigestion do not pose the same threat.

Bad eating habits, stress and a lack of exercise can all contribute to digestive problems. Internationally there is a significant increase in people suffering from chronic heartburn, ulcers and other digestive ailments. People spend billions of dollars across the globe on hospital treatment or medication to relief the symptoms of acid-related ailments.

The studies found that people on either one of the drugs were about one-quarter more at risk to develop pneumonia than non-users. The findings apply to hospital patients as well as out-of-hospital patients who developed pneumonia while they were taking one of the specific drugs. One explanation is that the medication neutralizes the stomach acid so that bacteria that normally would have been killed, now survive and can end up in the lungs.

The results of the studies are not cast in stone. It is not conclusive that the specific drugs are the only cause of the problem. One researcher warned that the chronic reflux of acid can also partly cause the increased occurrence of pneumonia. It is possible that stomach acids can end up in the airways or lungs where it can cause pneumonia.

The findings suggest that doctors as well as patients should practice caution in prescribing or using drugs for the relief of heartburn. Medication can have harmful effects that vary from patient to patient. Adapting one’s eating habits and/or lifestyle is often enough to solve the problem.

Medication for heartburn should only be taken when a diet and lifestyle changes do not solve the problem. Even then, medication to relief the symptoms should be taken cautiously and at the lowest dose possible. Prescribed medication for chronic symptoms should be the last resort.

The best action plan to curb stomach acidity and heartburn is to identify the cause. Various foods contribute to, or aggravate heartburn because they relax the lower esophageal sphincter which can cause the reflux of stomach acids into the esophagus. Food and drinks that contain caffeine are common culprits.

Each person is unique and what causes indigestion or heartburn in one person does not necessarily have the same effect on another. However, the most common causes of heartburn include foods like tomato and citrus fruit, as well as factors like smoking, alcohol, too large meals and tight-fitting clothing. Lying down on a full stomach can also cause acid reflux. Although chocolate can cause severe symptoms in some people, it luckily does not affect all.

My husband, who is a Vietnam veteran, was diagnosed with it a few years ago.

My husband, who is a Vietnam veteran, was diagnosed with it a few years ago.

It is a mental disorder that happens after a traumatic event or series of events. It doesn’t occur only with those who have been to war, but to victims of natural disasters, sexual abuse, criminal attacks or accidents. Some of the Hurricane Katrina survivors, for example, are beginning to go through the stages, due to the horrific experiences they went through.

So much of the public has a misconception about this condition. I blame this, in part, on the many unfair portrayals of Vietnam war vets, on television and in films, as deranged psychos and serial killers. While it’s true that there are some individuals with such severe problems that they may do the unthinkable, it doesn’t mean that every sufferer poses a threat to anyone and many endure their pain in silence, because they fear being categorized negatively.

Those with PTSD may not even realize that they have this condition, only that they are going through physical and emotional difficulties which they can’t explain. They often feel as though they have no control over anything. Symptoms include depression, lack of concentration, flashbacks, nightmares, insomnia, paranoia, reliving harrowing events over and over again, episodes of anger, hypervigilance and social alienation.

Physical symptoms can occur as well and include chest pain, headaches, dizziness, and immune system problems. Some people with it go through substance abuse, marital and other relationship problems and social anxiety.

My husband’s experience was that he felt that he had nowhere to turn, so he didn’t get help for years, due to the stigma he believed was attached to getting counseling. He went through divorce, estrangement from his children and fear of getting too close to anybody. He developed a way of camouflaging his condition publicly, but, in private, he was suffering tremendously.

After we married, I was able to persuade him to go get assessed by a counselor at the VA, which he did and they diagnosed him. He has since been in counseling and been prescribed drugs to treat depression and insomnia.

Counseling has been extremely cathartic for him and being able to relate to others who understand what he has been going through has helped him to open up more. He is slowly, but surely, going through the healing process now and is quite relieved that he is no longer suffering quietly.

You don’t have to be a veteran to have it. If you or a loved one has experienced some trauma in life and have not been able to resolve or recover from it within a few months, then you may need to seek professional help.

Getting psychotherapy doesn’t mean you are “crazy” and it can aid you in getting better.

Treatments include personal counseling, group therapy and prescription medications for some symptoms. If you dislike the idea of being put on an allopathic medication, due to the potential side-effects, ask your doctor or therapist if you can try an alternative, natural or homeopathic remedy for your condition. Always remember to keep your doctor and/or therapist informed about anything you take, to make certain it is both safe and viable for you.

If you are the family member sufferer, sometimes it might seem as though you are getting caught up in his or her symptoms as well, but learn to be supportive, without being stressed out yourself. If it gets to the point that you are having difficulty dealing with your loved one’s, seek counseling, if you need it.

My husband and I have a happy marriage. He opens up to me now, because of a lot of prayer and because he had the courage to ask for help.

Don’t be afraid to reach out. It can help you to get better.

An EMG test will determine if you have a deadly neurological disease, as well as many benign conditions. But exactly is involved during an EMG test? (Does it hurt?) I sat in on an EMG test that was recently done on my mother, and it’s actually a very fascinating invention of medical technology.

The EMG test on my mother took about an hour, maybe a tiny bit longer, but some of that time was spent by the doctor pausing to explain things related to her suspected condition (pronator syndrome or carpal tunnel syndrome). The doctor will place very small sticker-like patches on the patient’s body, at the location of the symptoms. He’ll then attach recording electrodes nearby these stickers. The electrodes are attached to a computer that’s a little bulkier than a laptop.

Preceding the actual testing, the doctor will type a lot of things into the computer. To measure nerve conductivity, the doctor must provide an electric shock to the patient with a two-pronged device about the size of a cell phone. When he delivers the shock, the result appears on the computer screen as a jagged horizontal line with a plus sign. Moments later two more images (jagged horizontal lines or sine waves) will appear, one reflecting the muscle activity, and one reflecting nerve activity.

The computer also shows the number of milliseconds it took for the nerve impulse to be conducted. The doctor at one point said that 4 milliseconds was normal, and 10 milliseconds was abnormal; that 50 meters per second was normal, and 42 meters per second was slow.

The patient may not be able to see the computer when all this is happening; my mother was lying on her back while the doctor conducted the EMG test on her right arm first. He suspected pronator teres syndrome, but he also suspected carpal tunnel syndrome.

He was heavily favoring pronator teres syndrome, though he concentrated the initial testing at the wrist and fingers. He very soon announced that she had carpal tunnel syndrome. At this point it was not speculation; it was a 100 percent positive diagnosis, because the EMG test can determine 1) if nerves are firing normally, and 2) if numbness, tingling and strength loss are caused by a healthy nerve signal merely being blocked from arriving at its destination, as in my mother’s case of carpal tunnel syndrome.

The EMG test involves the doctor moving around the various stickers and recording electrodes, then administering a shock at various points higher up from where the recording devices are; in my mother’s case, many of the shocks were delivered to her forearm.

In between the adjustments with the stickers and electrodes, he placed a tape measure to her skin to measure the length of the nerves. The patient, if lying down and unable to see what the doctor is doing, will feel the doctor moving around the stickers and attaching the recording electrodes, then running a tape measure along the skin, and then the electric shock.

The voltage of the shock can be adjusted, and it can be very unpleasant, though it lasts a second. The other thing that the patient will feel is pin pricks. The needle is a little thicker than an acupuncture needle, and the doctor will place a needle at varying locations as part of the EMG test. In the case of my mother, it appeared at one point that he embedded the needle a quarter of an inch into her palm. The “poke” he did there hurt to high heaven based on my mother’s reaction, but again, it was only for a fraction of a second.

The doctor also had her press her arm against resistance a few times. Since all he needed was her arms, she was able to maintain any leg position she was comfortable with. An EMG test does not require the patient to be sedated.

So now you know what’s involved in an EMG test. If you are scheduled for an EMG test, there is nothing to be afraid of, as far as how the procedure feels on your body. If the idea of electric shocks and pin pricks has you unnerved (no pun intended), remember, this test is a godsend for doctors, and it has to be done to provide a diagnosis for your condition (or to rule out an imagined condition).

Do You Know What EMG Test Is? Have a look on Does EMG Hurt?.

In a world where image is all, being obese is very difficult. The world at large, especially women, are extremely figure-conscious. The stigma attached to being heavy or obese is something a child never outgrows and can result in an obsessive need to lose weight. This obsession translates into very harmful diets, including fasting and excessive use of weight loss medication.

Weight loss is the process by which body weight is lost, mostly by burning up fat. This can be either voluntary or involuntary. Voluntary weight loss can be achieved by dieting, regular exercise, and changing lifestyle choices. Fasting for weight loss is not advisable, because many essential salts are depleted and dehydration can occur. These can be extremely hazardous and can result in fatality.

Trimming the fat

Even smart people fall prey to quick weight-loss programs. The conjectures about how actress Melissa Peterman lost her weight are many, even though she is reported to have said it was a result of exercising, eating right and getting advice from close friends. This kind of rapid and sudden weight loss can lead to gaining more weight back. It can also lead to various dangerous side effects, such as, increased risks of gallstone.

Many people, who have excessive fat deposited in their stomach region, are often prescribed Metformin. Metformin is an oral anti-diabetic drug that is primarily prescribed for the treatment of type 2 diabetes, in overweight people. It has been found to also help non-diabetics to lose weight by reducing hunger by lowering insulin levels in the blood. Metformin is also an alternative therapy for those who gain excessive weight due to polycystic ovarian syndrome and for weight gain that result from antipsychotic causes.

A weight loss chart is a very useful tool in monitoring your weight loss. There may be many parameters in the chart. But basically it needs to record your current weight and the optimum weight you seek to achieve. By regularly recording your weight you will be able to see the progress of our weight loss regimen, and know how much closer you are to achieving the target weight.

Interesting facts!

It is estimated that about 50 million Americans will go on self-imposed diets this year. But only 5 percent will be able to retain their new figures.

The diet and weight-loss industry is booming. About $30 billion a year is spent by Americans on diet products and programs, including diet food and drinks.

Being obese can lead to serious health risks such as heart disease, diabetes, stroke, gallstones, high blood pressure, and some forms of cancer

Going on very low-calorie diets unsupervised can deprive you of important nutrient source and this can be critical.

* There are no effortless weight loss plans. The only way is to reduce the number of calories you eat or to increase the number of calories you burn off through exercise. Most experts recommend a combination of both.

“crash” diets help you in quick weight loss, followed by a “rebound” weight gain once you resume normal eating. This is even more difficult to reduce.

A reduction of 500 calories per day will help you achieve that svelte figure. A total reduction of 3,500 calories is required to lose a pound of fat.

Do I have herpes you wonder to yourself?

Do I have herpes you wonder to yourself? If you’ve recently had unprotected intercourse, have been with an unfaithful partner, and notice some changes to your genital area, your first thought should be whether or not the changes are due to an STD, such as genital herpes.

Symptoms of Herpes for Men and Women

The symptoms of genital herpes in men and women are primarily the same. The main distinction for herpes symptoms for males and females is the different anatomy of each gender.

Herpes on the genitalia are characterized by lesions, usually oblong, that resemble sore. If you are intimate with an infected person, the herpes can be on the genitalia, inner thighs, and anus or wherever the infected person’s herpes comes in contact with.

The common symptoms of genital herpes for men and women are as follows:

-flu symptoms

-possibly a fever, especially if this is the first outbreak

-burning, itching, or other discomfort around the genital area

-lymph nodes that are swollen

-achy muscles

-Burning and/or pain when urinating

-possible discomfort or pain around the anus, buttocks, or inner thigh area

What is Genital Herpes Genital herpes is a virus and because of this the symptoms and signs of a herpes outbreak can resemble the same types of symptoms you would have with any other type of viral infection. The difference is you will possibly have these symptoms while also having lesions in and around the genitalia, i.e. penis, vagina, anus.

If you are feeling viral type symptoms associated with lesions to the genitals then you should seek medical attention. It may not be genital herpes, but it may very well be and a course of treatment should be started as soon as possible.

Is Genital Herpes Curable There is no cure for herpes but the signs and symptoms can be controlled better with various types of herpes medications.

Once you contract genital herpes you will have this condition for life. Many who have genital herpes say that the first outbreak is the worst and the first year of having genital herpes is harder to handle than subsequent years with the virus.

How Often Do Genital Herpes Occur

The outbreaks can happen once a year, once a month, or stay dormant for years. Genital herpes outbreaks can vary from person to person. Some people have outbreaks constantly, others only intermittently. Your doctor will help devise a treatment plan for you that will help suppress the symptoms and signs as much as possible.

It should be noted again that there is no cure for genital herpes. You should also be informed that even when you are not having an outbreak you can still spread the virus to others. It is important to always use a condom when having sexual intercourse. The condom is not guaranteed to prevent the spread of herpes because the virus is so small and can seep through the microscopic porous areas of the condom. Although using a condom is not always a full proof way of preventing the spread of herpes, it does help to prevent the spreading and should always be used when having sexual intercourse with a stranger, an unfaithful partner, or if your partner has a known diagnosis of genital herpes.

Spinal muscular atrophy (SMA) is a disease that affects the neurons in your spinal cord. Over time the disease can interfere with muscle control in any part of the body including those connected with breathing and swallowing. There are several types of SMA. The severity and progression of the disease depends on the type and how early symptoms first develop.

Spinal muscular atrophy is a genetic disease that runs in families. Often parents are carriers of the disease but show no symptoms. Genetic counseling can identify this disease in adult carriers and counseling can help you understand the risks of passing this disease to your children. Unfortunately, the first time this disease is discovered in a family is only after a child is diagnosed with the disease.

What Causes SMA?

Spinal muscular atrophy is one of several autosomal recessive genetic diseases. It is passed along to a child when both parents are carriers of a missing or mutated gene that affects the motor neurons in the spine. The mutated or missing gene is responsible for producing a protein responsible for the health production and function of the nerve fibers that begin in the spinal cord and branch out to all the muscles in the body.

With the gene mutation associated with SMA the lack of this protein results in nerve cells weakening and atrophying. This results in muscle weakness that generally progresses over time.

Autosomal recessive disorders are only passed along to children if both parents have the genetic defect. When both parents are carriers of the disease, a child has a one in four chance of inheriting the disease and showing some degree of symptoms.

Because genes come in pairs, an individual can have one set of healthy genes and one set of mutated genes without showing symptoms. An individual with one set of defective genes is known as a carrier. This means even though they show no signs of the disease, if they have children with another carrier, they can then pass the disease along to their children.

Testing for Spinal Muscular Atrophy

Diagnosing SMA is usually not done until symptoms are present and other conditions are ruled out. Because SMA is a genetic, a blood test is done that examines the SMN1 and SMN2 genes. Most individuals with spinal muscular atrophy are lacking the SMN1 gene or have a mutated SMN1 sequence.

An EMG test which measures the electrical activity in a muscle may be used to rule out other conditions that mimic SMA.

Prognosis for Individuals with SMA

Researchers have found that even though the SMN1 gene is the gene primarily responsible for producing the SMN protein for healthy muscle growth and development. There is also a smaller level of the SMN protein produced by the SMN2 genes.

Everyone has a certain number of SMN2 genes that continue to produce some protein. The number of SMN2 copies an individual has as well as the type of spinal muscular atrophy an individual is diagnosed with will determine their overall prognosis.

The key to maintaining as much muscular strength as possible is early diagnosis. Ongoing medical monitoring can go a long way in lessening the risk of life-threatening complications. A multi-directional team approach can help support parents in caring for their children and providing a quality of life that takes into consideration their individual challenges.

There is no cure for SMA or vaccine that can be given to prevent the disease.

For families already known to be carriers of SMA, genetic counseling can give a realistic idea of the chances for passing along the disease and help in determining the choices to be made.

Daniel Silvera is a young man who understands firsthand the challenges presented by this disease. Born with SMA and a quadriplegic for most of his 33 years of life, he has a unique perspective on the quality of life. His story challenges all of us to stop and re-examine the true meaning of life. You can read his story here.

Diabetes is a crippling disease (that causes weight loss), and it is (indirectly) a leading cause of death in developed and under-developed countries. Sadly, it also has no cure, or so they say. The medications prescribed are only to control and regulate the effects and symptoms rather than remove the cause of the disease. How many people have suffered due to this narrow vision in the methodology of treating sickness? But there is hope; more of that later.

Metformin is one of the medicines widely employed to treat diabetes. We could begin with a dosage of 450 – 500 milligrams once or twice a day (as may be prescribed by the physician) which is not that bad in this medicine obsessed world we live in. It is quite an effective drug and surprisingly less harmful in this ‘side effect’ filled system of medication that we are made to follow, called allopathy (the modern western system of medication).

Metformin side effects are usually overly exaggerated

Side effects are common in modern synthetic drugs so metformin side effects are not totally out of place. Firstly a lot has been said about the lactic acidosis but this risk or its significance has been disputed Secondly there is the risk of hypoglycemia which is common to all people undergoing allopathic treatment for diabetes. Thirdly there is the possibility of internal sickness that should be regularly looked into by your doctor, for example kidney problems.

It is ironic that we use medicine to treat a disease by making ourselves susceptible to other diseases as I say to my parents who both have experience of undergoing diabetic treatment by metformin and other medicines.

In the gloomy frame of things metformin stands out as being not that bad. My parents both used it and have not encountered significant side effects.

One should just be careful enough to avoid hypoglycemia which is shortage of glucose in the blood and can also result in coma or even death. Hypoglycemia – characterized by dizziness, excessive sweating and then leading to unconsciousness – is caused by not replacing the glucose in the blood that is lowered by the medicine with glucose in the food. As I remember one morning my father had taken his medicine but then did not take his breakfast and after a while even though he was just resting, he starting sweating profusely and developed a feeling of uneasiness and dizziness. We immediately gave him some spoonfuls of sugar and then he had his breakfast. Things got back to normal pretty soon. So, we just need to keep glucose handy in some form or the other. We may have some glucose tablets, or a cup or two of fruit juice, or even just plain sugar. It should be immediately given to the patient and he would be alright in a while. This simple emergency measure is sometimes life saving!

To avoid hypoglycemia you should avoid means of lowering blood glucose too much like not taking your meal after having taking the medicine, or physical strain like exercise, brisk walk or plain simple gardening in the backyard, after taking the medicine. One may have to consult with his doctor to regulate the timing of his daily chores with respect to his medication.

Also it is important to keep a check on your kidneys regularly and the creatinine level, doctors say. Because excessive creatinine is said to be related to kidney failure.

With all that and with a little caution one may have no specific problems with this medicine.

The hope…

Allopathic drugs in general are prone to side effects and contraindications. So to treat one disease you risk acquiring another with it and then call it side effect!

Secondly, to treat one disease you may have to stop or slow down your treatment of another disease because the medication for that disease is a contra indication for the medicine you want to use. Contraindications also include among other things allergic reaction of individual people to individual drugs .

Add to that the drugs don’t even cure the disease many of the times like in the case of diabetes or asthma for example. So the way out is that you simply look for other ways to treat or even cure the supposedly non curable disease and I’m sure there is a cure for every disease only that not everyone knows it. As I said earlier there is hope. Since we are not discussing alternative medicine I will not go into details.

Diabetes in particular, can be controlled quite well just by diet control. It is not as far fetched as one may think. Even with medication you have dietary restriction and the medicine is not curing (only controlling) the disease either so you may as well control your diabetes with just proper diet and exercise and completely set yourself free from these toxic and harmful medicines. But be careful not to leave medication suddenly once you are already upon medication but taper down your usage and leave it slowly.

Then there are many ancient treatments for diabetes like the use of bitter gourd that is used by Indians (Asian not native American) and other Asians even in their cuisine. Other treatments may also be found on deeper research. Set yourself free and make your body toxic free and adopt natural medicine. Natural medicine is holistic and rarely is anyone allergic to natural substances. Side effects and contraindications will then not be a common feature in the instructions for usage anymore. Let’s hope.

In response to darkness (as during the nighttime when we’re in bed), our body produces melatonin. This hormone, which is derived from serotonin (a neurotransmitter found in the brain and blood serum), is secreted by the pineal gland of the brain. This natural process of melatonin-secretion takes place especially during the night when lights are off. More than anything else, it is melatonin that induces us to sleep the moment we retire at night. During daytime, the production of melatonin is considerably lessened. It is for this reason that melatonin is recognized as our ‘body clock’ setter.

Melatonin has come to be known as an efficient treatment for insomnia – a condition characterized by the continued inability to get sufficient sleep. Insomnia can be one of the symptoms of jet lag (the others being excessive weariness and peevishness), or it may be the result of an inefficient production of melatonin in a person. In either case, melatonin supplements have been proven to help a person get his much-needed sleep. A supplement may be most effective when taken about half an hour prior to hitting the bed. Some air travelers, however, insist that melatonin do not work as well for them. This may be because, as some frequent fliers opine, their timing isn’t right when taking the supplement. Other seasoned sojourners can be more detail-conscious: To determine when to take melatonin, they take into account time zones traversed and directions flown.

Concerns on the safety of melatonin supplements have been raised, even for those with low dosage. Of course, such apprehensions are more pronounced when high-dosage drugs are involved. A number of side effects, associated with the long-term use of melatonin, have been identified. These include headaches, stomach distress, feeling of dejection, and torpidity during daytime. If only for these reasons, it will be best to seek professional medical advice before taking melatonin

Still, there are those who contend that melatonin is safe for treating insomnia. Others assert that melatonin helps in the alleviation of seasonal affective disorder, or SAD – a condition that is likened to jet lag and is common during the season of winter. People living in the northern portions of the globe are those known to suffer from SAD the most. As winter proceeds, their body clock loses coordination with clock time and rising in the morning becomes an arduous task for them. To help solve this condition, they take small doses of melatonin in the afternoon. This, they claim, helps set their body clock in advance so they are able to get up in the cold winter mornings without much difficulty.

As to the assertion by some people that melatonin also actually functions like an antioxidant in counteracting the free radicals in the body, medical experts agree that this requires further researches and studies.

Vitamin D is essential to your good health, but like everything else, it should not be overdone! It is possible to experience a vitamin D overdose, especially since we actually need fairly low levels of vitamin D in our bodies to function.

Vitamin D is essential to your good health, but like everything else, it should not be overdone! It is possible to experience a vitamin D overdose, especially since we actually need fairly low levels of vitamin D in our bodies to function.

Vitamin D overdose causes Hypervitaminosis D due to toxic levels in the body. It can be serious if the causes of the symptoms are not understood and intake of the vitamin stopped.

What causes of vitamin D overdose? Exposure to sunlight is the primary source of vitamin D, and as little as fifteen minutes of sunlight “therapy” three times a week is all you really need for your body to produce the vitamin D you need. You cannot overdose on vitamin D by getting too much sun, though, as your body only produces what you need.

You will probably also not experience a vitamin D overdose from food sources. Too many supplements are often to blame for excessive vitamin D intake, as your body cannot shut down the absorption of vitamins from supplements. This can cause the build up of vitamin D to toxic levels. Ironically, toxic levels of vitamin D are often the result of therapeutic prescription of the supplement due to an original deficiency – high levels may have been prescribed for patients with rickets, for instance.

A vitamin D overdose is never the result of a single high dose, rather the levels of toxicity in the body builds up in the body’s fat cells over time. Most nutrients that we consume too much of, the body simply gets rid of; however, with vitamin D it has no such mechanism, but stores the excess in the fat cells. It is the stored vitamin D that eventually leads to toxic amounts in your body.

The upper intake levels for babies are 25 micrograms, while for older children and adults, 50 micrograms per day are sufficient. Children will suffer from toxicity more quickly than adults.

What are the health risks of a vitamin D overdose?

1	Because vitamin D has primarily the function of encouraging calcium absorption, high levels of calcium in the blood is possible. This could lead to excessive calcium in the intestinal tract.

2	High levels of phosphate and calcium in the lungs, heart and kidneys, which can damage your organs permanently.

3	Loss of appetite, nausea, vomiting and weight loss.

4	High levels in the kidneys can lead to kidney stones, renal failure and excessive production of urine.

5	If you are pregnant, a vitamin D overdose can cause deformities in your baby.

6	Other symptoms include bone pain, fatigue, excessive thirst and dehydration, itchy skin and deafness.

An overdose can be treated by simply stopping the intake of supplements, and lowering the amount of calcium you ingest until the symptoms stop.

Always consult your doctor before taking vitamin supplements, and in the case of vitamin D, when you get a lot of sun exposure, you will probably not need to take vitamin D supplements at all. Vitamin D in the correct amounts is essential to good health.

Dandruff is a skin condition that causes flakes. It occurs in the scalp, ears, nose, and other parts of the body that have higher oil content. This is the reason that the skin is forced to shed old cells at a rapid rate; thus, the appearance of flakes. It causes problems and can have more serious complications like massive hair loss.

Common Causes of Dandruff

Contrary to popular belief, dandruff is not caused by poor hair care such as too much shampoo or ultra-dry skin. There are several factors that can result in dandruff. Stress, weather changes, certain food and diet, or drugs can lead to the appearance of dandruff. Aside from these, the list below shows the common causes of dandruff:

* Shampoo – Keeping your hair clean needs enough shampoo to do the job. Try to reach all areas and scrub a little to clean your scalp as well. If you are not shampooing enough, the hair might need a little more cleaning.

* Rinsing – After shampooing your hair, rinsing should be done completely to prevent dandruff.

* Food – Caffeine and oily food can contribute to the cause of dandruff.

Prevention and Treatment

To prevent dandruff, shampoo your hair regularly. This keeps the hair clean. If you already have dandruff, use a mild shampoo or anti-dandruff one that contains zinc pyrithione or salicylic acid. Make sure to rinse your scalp and hair completely. Washing your hair brushes and hair combs regularly also prevents dandruff from appearing. This makes sure that anything that touches your scalp is clean.

Fenugreek Seeds – Try this solution: put 2 tablespoons of grounded fenugreek seeds and leave them soaking in water through the night. The following day, massage them on your scalp and leave it for up to 45 minutes. After that, shampoo your hair with a ritha and acacia concinna solution. Rinse thoroughly.

Apple Cider Vinegar – Instead of using regular shampoo, try using apple cider vinegar to wash hair completely. Then, wrap your head in a very warm towel for up to forty-five minutes before rinsing. Put on a shower cap for better results. Doing this two times every week can help treat dandruff. You can also use an almond oil ingredient if you do not like apple cider vinegar.

When treating dandruff, you have to be very persistent and consistent. Observe hair care regularly so you can say goodbye to dandruff permanently.
