Scar Removal Options for the Average Joe

When it comes to healing severe skin scarring caused by injuries like wounds and skin problems like acne, we more often than not associate it with high-priced medical operations like cosmetic and laser surgeries. While there is sensible basis for this connection, being that they are maybe some of the more effective scar removal options most particularly if money is not much of an issue, there are other choices available for many of us who do not have the financial capability to put money into such a treatment.

However, before we provide more details about these effective and financially “reachable” methods, let us first learn more about the methods that do not work regardless of whether they are cheap or not.

There are various over-the-counter methods and products that can be found in the market today. Most of them involve unproven working mechanics.

Vitamin E creams – these products are some of the most widely pushed out there claiming it will help in your scarring worries. However, these products are not only quite ineffective at what they claim they do but they also have a high probability (about 30%) of causing allergic reactions. They are however quite effective as moisturizers.

Onion extracts creams – these topical applications are some of the more often cited scarring solution and one of the most popular brands is known as Mederma. However, a clinical trial performed to find out whether this class of anti-scarring products work indicated that it simply does not and evidence suggests that it just works just as well as any petroleum lubricant that can be found in stores. It is pretty safe to use though unlike vitamin E creams which entails some risks of allergic reaction.

There exist other scar treatment products that are made from natural components like cocoa, aloe vera, lime juce and cucumber but no proof of their effectiveness are available for anyone looking to do a little research.

Products that offer effective scar treatment without breaking the bank are products that has silicone in them like silicone sheets and creams (more effective when used in conjunction with each other). This products have been clinically shown to be good in improving or removing scar tissues, even with keloids or hypertrophic scar tissues. This is backed up by scientific clinical trials and is considered as the standard in scar treatment today.

Silicone sheeting is better as it is not invasive and is quite painless and most especially, relatively cheaper compared to other effective options. This technique is especially more effective if applied early in the wound healing process and is a well accepted method in treating burn injuries.

Scar removal methods that work does not have to involve painful and inconvenient methods such as surgical procedures as there are effective, yet cheaper ways to achieve the same results. Silicone sheeting application is one such ways and is shown to be effective through clinical trials.
